Scheme info / news via Really Simple Syndication (RSS)

The Portable Antiquities Scheme is now offering a variety of news feed in XML format. These are commonly known as Really Simple Syndication feeds (RSS). This is a simple way of deploying our news, stories and artefact data, without having to directly visit our site. If you subscribe to a RSS news feed, you will get an alert telling you that a new item has been added to the systems that we use. If it interests you, then you can visit our page via one click.

We currently offer the following RSS feeds:

Database specific feeds - geographical

These feeds are created directly from the database and are set to return items with images only. If you want to create your own follow this tutorial.

To view these feeds, you will need a RSS feed reader, there are many out there and we recommend utilising a freeware version. Several examples are given below, and you can also utilise browsers such as Mozilla firefox to read these feeds.

Firefox has lots of freely downloadable extensions that allow you to read RSS feeds, Internet Explorer and Safari also integrate auto discovery. If you see an orange icon in your address bar, then a feed is available from that site. You can also integrate these feeds directly into your website with some open source solutions. These include javascript and php parsing.

Macintosh OX icon Mac OS X: NetNewsWire
This elegant Mac-like aggregator is easy to use and powerful.
Windows icon Windows: SharpReader
Simple, but gets the job done. This needs .net Framework installed on your pc, so if you run Win XP, make sure you are using current service pack 2.
Linux icon Linux: Straw
The best aggregator for GNOME.
