The Scheme's database

The Scheme's databaseThe Portable Antiquities Scheme's database is the home for all the information collected since its inception in 1997. Within this repository, you can find details of a wide range of archaeological finds which have been recovered from disturbed contexts. This in turn leads us to the name 'portable antiquities'; these are objects that can be easily removed from situ (for example you can't easily move a Roman column, but you can do so with a Roman brooch.)

The database is there for several reasons:

  1. Create a textual, spatial and visual record in perpetuity of the antiquities that people discover pursuing daily affairs (sometimes it is the only chance archaeologists will get to make a record.)
  2. Produce data that can be used by academic researchers.
  3. Produce data that allows Archaeological Resource Management to be fulfilled.
  4. Allow free access to the text and images contained within the record for all interested parties.

A succinct statement of what the database is therefore is quite hard to produce. It exists for a multitude of activities.
