COIN WEIGHT

Unique ID: SUSS-275051

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

A copper alloy bullion weight for silver coinage. The weight is flat and circular. On one surface it has the markings D X and some sort of motif in a rectangular shallow, depression (on three lines). Set at a die axis measurement of 6 on the reverse of the weight are the marks D X and what appears to be a rampant lion in a shallow depression (on three lines). Faint file marks can be seen on both surfaces. Bullion weights were used to weight quantities of silver, during the reign of William III, when much of the hammered coinage had been replaced by machine-made coins. The original silver hammered coins would often be clipped or damaged so people wanted to be paid by weight of silver. This weight dates to circa 1640-1816.
