Medieval gilded cast copper alloy horse-harness pendant, rectangular with a suspension loop turned at 90 degrees. The entire face is gilded. There is a central rivet hole with a copper alloy rivet in place. The face is decorated with a central reserved lozenge superimposed onto a reserved saltire cross, both outlined by grooves; the field around and behind is covered with punched annulets. The reverse is plain apart from the rivet and it has a dark green patina. Light green corrosion product covers much of the reverse and there are traces on the face. The edges have been damaged. Length 39.1mm, width 33mm, thickness 1.51mm, weight 10g.
Compare other pendants with reserved bands and punched annulets, such as SOM-B04EB4, SF-AC66C3, perhaps NMS-32D5E8. They may be proto-armorial; Ashley (2002, 6-7) dates them to c. 1125-1225 AD.
Notes:
The image attached shows several photographs combined, which are clearly not to the same scale. The scale in the image should not be trusted; the dimensions in the description are likely to be more reliable.
