FINGER RING

Unique ID: SUSS-F25354

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Published Find published

Fragment of a copper-alloy 'stirrup-shaped' finger-ring with a slender hoop rising to a pointed bezel 5.5mm high by 3.6mm thick. The bezel has an oval setting; the stone, glass or paste 'gem' is missing but the setting contains the remains of the white cement, perhaps calcium carbonate, that would have been used to hold the 'gem' in place. The ring has old breaks on the hoop with about one-third of the original diameter surviving. The ring is similar to examples in Egan and Pritchard 1991 (p. 326; refs. 1608, 1609); they suggest this form was popular from the mid 12th to mid 15th century, although most fashionable at the earlier part of the range. Incomplete diameter 17.4 mm, hoop 1.9mm wide by 1.6mm thick at the break; it weighs 1.02g.
